Email sequences in Gmail: five steps, one thread, stop on reply

An email sequence in Gmail is a first email plus scheduled follow-ups, sent from your own address. Innmail runs sequences of up to five steps from your Gmail, keeps every step in the same thread, and ends the sequence for anyone who replies.

How an Innmail email sequence is built

Step one is your first email. Steps two to five are optional follow-ups, each with its own body and a wait time in days after the previous step. Personalization variables like {{firstName}}, {{company}} and your custom columns work in every step.

Before launching, "Preview each email" lets you page through each contact's messages, so you can check a sequence the way one person will experience it.

What happens while a Gmail sequence runs

First emails wait in the review queue for your approval. Once approved, Innmail sends one email at a time through Gmail, with a randomized delay between sends, only inside your sending window. Later steps go out as replies in the same Gmail thread.

In the background, Innmail checks your mailbox over IMAP. A reply ends that person's sequence. A bounce does too, and adds them to the suppression list. If bounces climb, sending pauses. A send reservation means no step ever goes out twice to the same person.

One budget for everything you send

Sequences, campaigns and direct sends draw from one daily send budget. On a new mailbox that budget starts low and grows each day up to a ceiling you set. If today's budget runs out, the rest waits for the next sending window rather than bursting out at once.

What Innmail sequences do not do

Innmail sequences are email only, from one mailbox. There are no LinkedIn steps, no inbox rotation, and no A/B testing. If you need multichannel sequences, lemlist is built for that. If you need many inboxes rotating at volume, Instantly or Smartlead fit better. Innmail is for personal sequences you can stand behind, email by email.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps can an email sequence in Gmail have?

Up to five in Innmail: the first email and up to four follow-ups.

Does the sequence stop when someone replies?

Yes. Replies are detected from your mailbox over IMAP and end the sequence for that contact.

Can I choose the delay between steps?

Yes. Each follow-up has its own wait, set in days after the previous email, and it still only sends inside your sending window.

Do I need to approve every step?

No. The review queue holds the first email for each contact. After you approve it, the follow-ups run on their own until a reply, bounce or unsubscribe.

Can I run a sequence from a non-Gmail mailbox?

Yes. Over SMTP and IMAP, follow-ups thread with standard reply headers and replies still stop the sequence.
